One of the most crucial topics I learned about through our
class was the critical path objective. The critical path is a list of objectives
that need to be executed by a specific time in order for the rest of the plan
to run smoothly and be successful. In class we learned about different software
that enabled us to map out literally every task in full detail from start to
finish. This is something that is applicable not only to strategic planning for
events, but something you can apply to virtually everything. In fact I’ve been
using one platform for my current job search.
We practiced a lot of negotiation exercises from many
different perspectives in our class. It helped us gain a better understanding
of how event planners and venues work ‘together’ and not against each other to
reach a common objective and plan. Personally, when I have had to negotiate for
something substantial, I take a very aggressive approach. I learned that
working together at the same aptitude could yield much better results and a
win-win situation for both parties.
Finally, the ethics part of our class was what I found to be
the most enjoyable. Everyone has their own moral code and opinions differ even
slightly no matter if people feel generally similar. An in-class case struck
much input from the entire class. People offering different perspectives, real
world & what should be done, personal vs someone else, and individual vs
business. We watched a response from an industry professional on the very same
case that sparked even more conversation and debate. It made me realize to
always question anything you don’t feel 110% about. Make sure that your actions
can’t cause any negative repercussions for any parties involved.
